The Coastal Navigation Shore Based Theory Course Overview

The AYF009 Coastal Navigation Certificate Course is competency based and is conducted by FunSail under the umbrella of Yachting Queensland as the Registered Training Organisation for DEST. The course can be conducted either as a full time, five day classroom based course or over two nights of three hours each for six weeks, plus one day at sea for your practical assessment. The high standard of this course is assured by the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). The course includes all the theory needed to progress to the level of Coastal Skipper. The cost is $1,452. YA and DEST accreditation.

Learning Outcome

Persons who are assessed as Competent at the conclusion of this training program will be able to navigate commercial or recreational vessels in coastal waters.

Accelerated Learning

Candidates seeking recognition of their prior learning and current competencies may be granted a credit for any module of this training program subject to the provision of sufficient evidence to satisfy an assessor of their competencies.

Length of the Training Program

Approximately 50 hours.

bulletIn depth study of charts, symbols and drawing instruments
bulletExplanation and application of Dead Reckoning and Estimated Position
bulletPractical setup and use of compasses - hand bearing, steering and the pelorus
bulletHow to swing a compass and prepare a Deviation Card
bulletCompass Variation - definition, sources, allowance, practical application and correction
bulletAn in depth study of position fixing using a wide variety of methods
bulletA study of the causes of tides and tidal streams
bulletTidal streams and ocean currents - how they effect coastal navigation and how to compensate for them
bulletHow to predict tidal streams and ocean currents and compensate for them
bulletExplanation of leeway, how to predict it and correct for it
bulletElectronic navigation aids - RDF, Radar, GPS, EPIRB, speed and distance measuring devices
bulletAn in depth study of echo sounders
bulletHow to recognise errors in log readings
bulletA detailed explanation of GPS and how to operate it
bulletA detailed explanation of radar and how to operate a small radar set
