Overview

To be endorsed by Yachting Australia as a YachtMaster is a considerable achievement. It says that you can be trusted to safely deliver a yacht and her crew across the open sea. There are two levels of YachtMaster - YachtMaster Offshore and YachtMaster Ocean. The Offshore qualification indicates that you are competent to navigate within a limited distance of a coastline where celestial navigation skills are not mandatory. YachtMaster Ocean is an endorsement of your Celestial Navigation skills and your ability to safely sail across an open sea at a considerable distance from the nearest coastline. If you have attained the YA Coastal Skipper's Certificate then you will need to satisfy the pre-requisites imposed by YA prior to applying for examination for your YachtMaster endorsement.

FunSail provides coaching for the YachtMaster Offshore examination for a cost of $66 per hour, on a one-on-one basis.

FunSail can also assist you in gaining the sea miles you need as part of the examination pre-requisites.

Before candidates for this certificate come forward for examination, they must have gained the following minimum experience and qualifications:

	50 days living aboard a vessel in commission (whilst being used for charter or sail training)
	2,500 nautical miles logged, offshore, to include three passages of over 60 miles and two passages of over 60 miles where the candidate acted as Skipper and which included overnight passages
	Coastal Skipper Certificate (or show evidence of equivalent YachtMaster level Theory and Practical competencies)
	Log book up to date and reflecting all sea time
	Current Senior First Aid Certificate
	Restricted Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency
	Instructor Endorsement

Examination for YachtMaster Ocean endorsement requires that the candidate has successfully completed the following in addition to the above YachtMaster Offshore pre-requisites:

	Already hold YachtMaster Offshore Certificate
	Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of the YachtMaster Ocean Shorebased Course

Completed an ocean passage onboard a cruising yacht and:

	Took a full part in passage preparation
	Throughout the passage acted as Skipper or Watch Captain
	The passage was in excess of 600 nautical miles
	At sea continuously for a period of at least 96 hours
	Over 50 nautical miles from shore continuously for a period of at least 48 hours or for a distance sailed of 200 nautical miles
	All navigation & calculations must be completed without the use of programmed calculations or electronic navigation aids
	All source worksheets and other documents to be provided for examination confirming the positions were achieved by correct celestial navigation methods.

Candidates for YachtMaster endorsement must make application directly or through FunSail to Yachting Queensland for Examination.

Cost:

$66 per hour for coaching provided by FunSail

$264 for each 24 hours at sea in classes of up to five students.
